The challenge

UC Irvine wanted to add a solar canopy to the top deck of an existing, decades-old parking structure. That is a very different job from a new-build carport: the load path already exists, the building is occupied every day, and there is zero room to guess.

RCSI was chosen because the work demanded a contractor who could do three hard things at once:

  • Add new load to an aging structure safely. A new steel canopy transfers weight into columns and footings that were designed and poured years earlier for a different purpose.
  • Work in the middle of a live campus. Thousands of students and staff use the structure daily. Closing it was not an option.
  • Deliver on a tight window without cutting corners on a load-bearing, occupied structure where there is no margin for error.

The technical hook: attaching a modern solar canopy to a 40-year-old parking structure meant reverse-engineering the original design intent, verifying the existing structure could carry the new loads, and installing steel with a crane in a congested, active school zone all while the garage stayed open.

Our approach

1. Pre-construction due diligence, engineer first, build second

RCSI did not assume the existing structure could take the load. The team back-engineered the as-built conditions: reviewing the original drawings, verifying dimensions on site, and coordinating with the original engineer of record to confirm the structure’s true load-bearing capacity before any steel was ordered.

This is where RCSI’s design-build model earns its keep: because engineering, fabrication, and construction sit under one roof, the load analysis fed directly into a canopy designed to fit the real structure, not an idealized version of it.

2. Execution planning- build the logistics before you build the steel

With the structure staying open, RCSI developed a detailed crane and logistics plan built around a working campus:

  • Materials staged and delivered during low-traffic windows.
  • Installation sequenced to keep parking available and disruption minimal.
  • Safety protocols set for crane operations in a congested, pedestrian-heavy zone.
  • Emergency-vehicle access maintained at all times.

3. Self-performed construction- fast because the planning was right

Because RCSI self-performs the build, there were fewer hand-offs and fewer surprises once work started. While most contractors projected 12 weeks or more for this installation, our team finished well ahead of that with no safety incidents and virtually no impact on daily campus operations.

The results

UC Irvine got a new solar canopy on an existing asset, clean on-site generation, and shaded parking on the top deck with:

  • A fully operational solar canopy that makes clean energy for the campus.
  •  Shaded car parking for hundreds of cars.
  •  Zero structural changes for the original garage structure.
  •  A project completed within the scheduled time frame and budget.

What impressed the client most: RCSI proved that solar construction on a complex, occupied structure can move fast without trading away quality or safety.

Why this project reflects how RCSI works

Not every building is straightforward; that’s the specialty. RCSI’s in-house engineering team is built to assess and work with older, more complex structures, so the solution is designed right from the start rather than forced onto the site.

Real-world sites need real-world planning. RCSI schedules around the realities of active job sites, daily operations, occupied buildings, and campus traffic, so projects move without unnecessary disruption.

Good engineering is what makes fast, accurate work possible. When the analysis is right at the start, construction follows smoothly and on schedule.

This is the same discipline RCSI brings to every project across its 1,000-plus structural-steel builds as a full-service, self-performing general contractor working for public agencies, corporate owners, and developers across California, Arizona, Texas, Utah, and Washington.
